Dave Reese, one of our dedicated, multi-talented volunteers
has graciously offered his thoughts on volunteering at
America On Wheels:
"There
are so many benefits for me personally being a volunteer
at America On Wheels. I get to learn more about local
history as well as automotive history. I get the opportunity
to help with the renaissance of downtown Allentown by
helping make AOW an anchor for the city’s riverfront development.
I get to watch people’s faces while they are reviving
old memories when looking at a particular car, or when
they discover an old favorite song on the working jukebox.
I get to watch the faces of children in awe of some of
the beautiful vehicles that they see in our rotating collection.
I get to share my enthusiasm for these vehicles with others,
and often to learn much more from the visitors to the
museum than I can tell them. As a detailer of the vehicles,
I get to see the machinery up close and the vehicles become
like family to me. I even get to share images I have taken
of the machinery in the collection as well as photos from
our special events over the internet via my photo pages
and Facebook. And I become friends with the many interesting
volunteers here at America On Wheels as well as meeting
the visitors who pass through the doors. So even if it
seems I am volunteering to help others and the city’s
redevelopment, I am the one receiving so much more from
my experiences at America On Wheels. It is always a rewarding
experience."
