Volunteer Allison Hengst
Allison Hengst started volunteering at AOW in July
2009. She was looking for a way to gain experience
in event planning after graduating from Millersville
University. Her dad came upon a newspaper ad where
the museum was looking for a variety of volunteers.
Since she grew up around cars, it seemed natural to
pursue the opportunity.
"Everyone is very friendly and I always look forward
to coming in to the museum. It has been an invaluable
experience doing something that I love. I can be creative
and my ideas are welcome. Ultimately, I like making
a difference and being a part of a team and at America
On Wheels I am doing both."
Allison worked at the Moonlight Memories Gala, and
solicited auction items from local businesses. She
also recently organized Children's Safety Day, where
she coordinated vendors, and mapped the event. For
the second anniversary event, she ran the Bulldog
Beauty Contest. Connie McDowell, Education Coordinator
notes that Allison is extremely capable, and completes
her tasks with great energy and enthusiasm. Check
out the photo of Allison shown with the bulldog contestant
entries.
Volunteers Tour Bulgari Collection In Allentown
In honor of National Volunteer Month, AOW volunteers
got a real treat when they were given a private two
hour tour of Bulgari's car collection right here in
Allentown. Collection curator Keith Flickinger graciously
gave his time to over 50 volunteers who heard his personal
story and connection to Bulgari. The museum recently
featured some classic cars from Bulgari during its last
exhibit. Volunteers were amazed and grateful to see
not only the collection but the workshops devoted to
restoring these and other fine vehicles. Thank you Keith!
AOW Intern Wins Collectors Foundation Scholarship
East Greenville resident Chad Krivin, a senior studying
Automotive Restoration with a minor in Art and History
at McPherson College, has won a $4800 Scholarship grant
from the Collectors Foundation in Traverse City, Michigan.
"We are thrilled to have someone with Chad's interest
and ability joining us for the summer," said Linda Merkel,
AOW Director.
The grant will pay Krivin's salary for twelve weeks
and afford him the opportunity to work with the Exhibit
and Collections Committee and staff to create the
proper labeling and documentation for vehicles as
well as handling artifacts and conducting research
for future exhibits. He will also work with AOW's
Education Coordinator to develop and implement new
educational programs.
"I am very interested in a job in a museum setting
and I believe that having the automotive knowledge
along with a background in computer design and history
will help me find a job in a museum after I graduate,"
Krivin said. The opportunity to learn the curator's
job and work in an established museum will help him
achieve his career goals and he expressed gratitude
to the Collector's Foundation for making the internship
possible.
The Collectors Foundation is an educational grant-making
organization founded by the long-term interests of
the collector vehicle and classic boat communities.
