Issue 17 / Spring 2013
Museum Education Continues to Blossom
By: Linda Merkel, Executive Director

America On Wheels believes that learning within a museum is self-motivated, self-directed and is lifelong. Our collections, public learning programs, and research opportunities are inseparably linked to serve our diverse public of varied ages, backgrounds and knowledge. The museums newest learning area, The Restoration Learning Center, features participatory activities keyed to each of the America On Wheels Museum's themes. Programs include: photography, disassembly, cataloging parts, upholstery, body paint and reassembly. Museum programs, carried out in concert with primary and secondary schools, emphasize studies in social studies, history, physics and math. Another new area of learning which debuts this spring is "Safety Square." Visitors, whether they are children, adults or senior citizens, will experience interactive lessons regarding pedestrian, bicycle, city bus and school bus safety programs. Presentation concerning no drinking and driving, handling a vehicle during snow/ice and no texting while driving will also be available. All of our programs have value to public transportation and public health. Safety Square also seeks to educate people about basic rules of conduct, such as looking all ways before crossing a street or driveway, or wearing a helmet while biking or skateboarding. Education remains a key component in the mission of America On Wheels. We strive for quality educational programs through innovative and creative methods of service. Keep reading the Spoke n'Word for updates and ongoing presentations throughout the year!
